Our expedition embarked with an evening flight from Timișoara, propelling us into the heart of an ancient continent known for its profound natural wonders and cultural depth. As we boarded Lufthansa flight LH1471 to Frankfurt, the air was alive with anticipation for the experiences that lay ahead.
The brief interlude in Frankfurt was a seamless transition. This short layover served as a momentary pause, allowing us to gather our thoughts and prepare for the journey's continuation to Windhoek, Namibia. The excitement was palpable among us as we awaited our connecting flight, knowing that each passing moment brought us closer to the African continent.
Our overnight Discover Airlines flight 4Y132 to Windhoek was underpinned by a sense of crossing into another world. The flight, a silent passage through the night skies, was a time for reflection on the vast distances we were covering, and the diverse landscapes, cultures, and histories we were about to encounter. Landing in Windhoek at the break of day, we were greeted by the first light of the African sun, marking the beginning of our exploration of this magnificent continent.
23rd February 2024 - Arrival at Victoria Falls
Our brief stopover in Windhoek was just a precursor to the more complex leg of our journey. We boarded the Discover Airlines flight 4Y138 to Victoria Falls Airport in Zimbabwe, our excitement building with every mile closer to our destination. Ahead of our trip, we had thoroughly informed ourselves about the entry conditions for Zimbabwe. As Romanian citizens, we knew we would need a visa upon arrival. The choices were clear: a single entry visa at 30 USD and a double entry visa at 45 USD. We had initially hoped to apply for the KAZA Univisa for 50 USD, which offers unlimited crossings between Zimbabwe and Zambia, a perfect fit for our travel plans. However, due to technical issues with the website, this option was unavailable to us.
Given these circumstances, we opted for the double entry visa at 45 USD per person, a decision made with full awareness of our limited options. This situation, far from straightforward, required us to adapt our plans and expectations. Despite these challenges, understanding the visa process beforehand allowed us to navigate this crucial step with relative ease. This preparation was instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition into Zimbabwe, laying a solid foundation for the adventures that lay ahead. Our experience underscores the importance of thorough pre-travel research and flexibility, elements that became central themes of our journey.
Transitioning from the airport to our hotel, our journey encapsulated the essence of travel within Africa. After navigating immigration and collecting our luggage, we prepared for the next leg of our journey, which included a transfer costing USD 40 per person. This segment necessitated a practical vehicle change, a straightforward but necessary step before crossing the bridge from Zimbabwe to Zambia, under the warm African sun registering at 37°C (99°F).
Crossing the bridge provided us with stunning views of the landscape, a memorable passage as we moved from one country into another. Once across, we were met with the Zambian immigration process. Here, the smooth procedure was notably facilitated by the absence of visa requirements for Romanian citizens, a detail that greatly streamlined our entry.
The vehicle switch, though a minor inconvenience in the heat, was quickly overshadowed by the efficiency of crossing into Zambia and the excitement of the experiences that awaited us. This moment of transition highlighted the practical aspects of travel, blending seamlessly with the anticipation of exploring Zambia's natural beauty.
Upon completing immigration formalities in Zambia, the earlier challenges of the day began to diminish, replaced by the eagerness for what lay ahead. Our arrival at the hotel marked a significant milestone, offering us a chance to reflect on the journey and look forward to the adventures that awaited, including the majestic Victoria Falls.
The Radisson Blu Mosi-Oa-Tunya, Livingstone Resort, in Zambia, served as our sanctuary, offering luxury and comfort amidst the wilderness. This resort was more than just accommodation; it was a retreat that allowed us to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and tranquility of Zambia. The exploration of the resort's offerings was a delightful experience, setting the stage for our venture to the Victoria Falls. Mosi-oa-Tunya indeed means "The Smoke That Thunders.” This term is aptly given to Victoria Falls, reflecting the phenomenal sight and sound of the falls.
Exploring the Victoria Falls from the Zambian perspective was undoubtedly the apex of our adventure, a moment that went beyond the bounds of typical tourism. After settling into the Radisson Blu Mosi-Oa-Tunya, Livingstone Resort in Zambia, we ventured to the falls, a short taxi ride away costing USD 10. The entry fee of USD 30 per person granted us access to this magnificent natural spectacle.
Witnessing the falls during February was a profound experience, marked by the zenith of their might due to the seasonal rains from November to March. The falls' overwhelming volume of water plunging into the abyss emitted a deafening sound and produced an astonishing visual display, truly a paradise for photography enthusiasts, like us. The journey along the various viewing points and the short bridge running parallel to the falls offered unparalleled opportunities to capture the essence of Victoria Falls, though it came with a reminder of the falls' power as the pervasive mist ensured a thorough soaking.
This period's unique conditions meant a different viewing experience from the drier seasons, with the mist sometimes limiting visibility but enhancing the mystique of the falls. High water levels also necessitated certain safety precautions, restricting activities like swimming in the Devil's Pool. Nevertheless, the verdant surroundings provided a vivid contrast to the more subdued hues of other times of the year, making our visit an unforgettable encounter with nature's force.
Spending close to two hours at the falls, we immersed ourselves in this timeless interplay between water and rock, a testament to nature's enduring craftsmanship. Exiting the park, we navigated the local market, engaging in the art of negotiation with vendors for souvenirs, a reminder of the vibrant culture that thrives alongside this natural wonder.
Our return to the hotel by taxi, just as the sun began to set, marked the end of an exhilarating day. The Radisson Blu Mosi-Oa-Tunya, Livingstone Resort provided a serene backdrop to reflect on the day's experiences, nestled as it is in the heart of this breathtaking region.
24th February 2024 - A Thrifty Adventure to Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls
After a tranquil start to our day at the Radisson Blu Mosi-Oa-Tunya, Livingstone Resort, we prepared for an afternoon excursion to witness Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwe side. With the sun scheduled to set at 6:45 pm, we planned our departure for around 3:30 pm, aiming to make the most of the daylight hours.
In an effort to economize while still soaking up the full experience, we opted against the direct taxi ride to Victoria Falls National Park's entrance in Zimbabwe, which would have set us back 30 USD. Instead, we chose a more budget-friendly approach, taking a taxi for just 10 USD to the Zambia Immigration point. From there, we embarked on a 2km walk, approximately 25 minutes, to the park's entrance in Zimbabwe. This route not only offered significant savings but also allowed us to enjoy a leisurely walk across the bridge that spans the two countries, offering unique photo opportunities of the falls and the chance to encounter local wildlife, such as baboons, which, while common in the area, were harmless and added an element of adventure to our journey.
This decision to walk between the countries was not only financially savvy but also enriched our experience with breathtaking views and unexpected encounters, making our visit to the Zimbabwean side of the falls even more memorable.
Upon finalizing our entry into Zimbabwe, we approached the gates of Victoria Falls National Park with anticipation. The entry fee, set at 50 USD per person for international tourists, felt somewhat steep, reflecting the premium placed on one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. While understandable given the global allure of the falls, this price point did prompt a moment of pause, reminding us of the costs associated with experiencing such unparalleled beauty firsthand.
Inside the park, the Zimbabwe side offered us a broad array of viewpoints, each presenting a distinct perspective on the falls’ magnificence. Despite the comprehensive vistas available here, which allowed us to see the falls in their full, sprawling glory, there was a part of us that remained partial to the experiences on the Zambian side. The immediacy and rawness of the falls from Zambia, where the mist felt more enveloping and the roar of the water more direct, held a special place in our hearts.
Navigating the park also brought a practical insight to light: the drenching experience near the falls is invigorating but might be inconvenient for travelers with immediate departure plans. The prospect of boarding a flight in damp clothes is worth considering when planning the timing of your visit.
Our return to Zambia was contemplative, set against the backdrop of a taxi negotiation that saw us paying 25 USD for the ride back to our resort. This expense, broken down into two segments, was a small part of the day's broader narrative of cost, value, and experience. The journey offered a quiet moment to reflect on the day's adventures, from the exhilaration of the falls to the unexpected dining situation that awaited us.
The day's adventures culminated in an attempt to enjoy a refined dining experience at the Royal Livingstone Victoria Falls Zambia Hotel by Anantara. Our anticipation, built up through a reservation made well in advance, met a hiccup when we found no table ready for us at Kubu restaurant. The alternative arrangement, while appreciated, didn’t quite live up to our culinary expectations, underscoring the unpredictability of travel and the necessity of adaptability.
Retreating to the Radisson Blu Mosi-Oa-Tunya, Livingstone Resort, the day's end found us in a reflective state, pondering over the intricate balance between cost and experience. The day was a vivid illustration of the highs and lows of travel, from the exhilarating views and encounters with nature to the nuances of navigating dining experiences and assessing the value of entrance fees. Each experience, whether it aligned with our expectations or deviated from them, contributed to the rich tapestry of our journey, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for the adventure of exploration and the beauty of the unexpected.
25th February 2024 - Departure from Victoria Falls
Our day began with a morning departure from the resort, setting off towards Victoria Falls Airport in Zimbabwe for our next leg of travel. The process of re-entering Zimbabwe necessitated the purchase of another visa for our third entry into the country, costing USD 30 per person. This additional step added about 15 minutes to our departure process, as the visa formalities were meticulously completed and applied to our passports.
Our flight, Ethiopian Airlines ET823, was slated for a 1:05 pm departure. This leg of our journey included a stop in Gaborone, where, despite remaining on board, we transitioned seamlessly from one segment of our flight to the next without the need to disembark. The stay on the aircraft during this interim, while routine, provided a moment of pause, allowing us to anticipate the next phase of our adventure.
By 9:40 pm, we touched down at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, marking the end of our day's journey across Africa. The evening arrival in Addis Ababa brought a mix of relief and anticipation for the next phase of our adventure.
Our overnight layover in Addis Ababa presented a unique situation due to our lack of an Ethiopian visa, which would have been necessary for passing through immigration. Ethiopian Airlines kindly offered us complimentary accommodation, but this was for a hotel located outside the airport terminal, which would have required us to have a visa to enter Ethiopia. Recognizing this constraint, we proactively booked a room at the Skylight In-Terminal Hotel instead. This hotel, situated within the airport terminal itself, was an ideal solution, allowing us to stay overnight without the need for a visa, thus circumventing the immigration process and ensuring a smooth transit through Ethiopia.
The overnight stay at the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel offered a comfortable and convenient respite, allowing us to rest and rejuvenate without the hassle of airport transfers or immigration procedures. This in-terminal accommodation was not just a place to sleep but a thoughtful provision by the airline to ensure the comfort and satisfaction of its passengers during layovers.
26th February 2024 - Arrival and Exploration in Seychelles
Our adventure continued with a morning departure from Addis Ababa. Boarding Ethiopian Airlines flight ET879 at 9:30 am, we embarked on our journey towards the enchanting Mahe Island, Seychelles. The flight, lasting approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes, was smooth, culminating in our arrival in Victoria at 2:20 pm, just as the rain began to grace the island with its presence.
Upon planning our trip to Seychelles, we navigated the entry requirements by submitting an eTA online (https://seychelles.govtas.com), ensuring a seamless entry process upon landing. The taxi transfer to our chosen sanctuary, the DoubleTree by Hilton Seychelles - Allamanda Resort and Spa, cost us 900 SCR, approximately 65 USD, marking the beginning of our island retreat.
Recognizing the limitations of public transportation on the island and the desire to explore freely, we opted for a car rental. This decision proved invaluable, allowing us to traverse the island's landscapes, with the assurance that no destination was more than 40-45 minutes away along the island's longest road.
Despite the afternoon rain, we ventured out to Baie Lazare beach, a decision that rewarded us with stunning views and a refreshing escape. The rain did little to dampen our spirits, and upon returning to our resort, we couldn't resist the temptation of a swim in the hotel pool, adding another layer of relaxation to our day.
Our resort's location on Anse Forbans beach was a highlight in itself, offering easy access to one of the island's picturesque beaches right at our doorstep.
The evening unfolded with a dinner at the hotel, where we indulged in local flavors and international cuisine, encapsulating a perfect end to a day of exploration and relaxation.

27th February 2024 - Immersive Explorations on Mahe Island
The day of 27th February 2024, unfolded with a serene awakening at the hotel. Our morning commenced with a sumptuous breakfast, offering a spread that tantalized our taste buds and prepared us for the day's escapades. Energized and eager, we embarked on our trip to discover the renowned Beau Vallon beach, nestled on the north-western shores of Mahe Island.
Beau Vallon beach, known for its wide and lengthy sandy expanse, beckoned us with its inviting waters and vibrant beach life. As we strolled along its shores, the beach revealed its distinctive feature— the majestic granite rocks adorning its northern end. These natural sculptures, standing as sentinels against the backdrop of turquoise waters, epitomized the unique geological beauty Seychelles is celebrated for. The contrast between the softness of the sand and the hardness of the granite created a visual and tactile experience that was both grounding and awe-inspiring.
Our quest for beachside beauty didn't stop at Beau Vallon. Driven by a desire to explore more of Mahe's coastline, we ventured to Grande Anse and Anse Takamaka. Grande Anse greeted us with its sweeping bay, a picturesque scene of tranquility that seemed untouched by time. Anse Takamaka, on the other hand, offered a more intimate setting, with lush greenery fringing its edges, casting dappled shadows over the soft sand. The sound of the waves at both beaches played a symphony that resonated with the peaceful rhythm of island life, enveloping us in a sense of deep connection with nature.
As the sun began its descent, we sought out the culinary delights of Green House restaurant.
Returning to the hotel, we found ourselves reflecting on the day's adventures with a sense of fulfillment and gratitude. The gentle sound of the waves in the distance, the soft breeze carrying the scent of tropical flowers, and the starlit sky above all contributed to an atmosphere of unparalleled tranquility and beauty.

28th February 2024 - Embarking on a New Chapter
The day began with the first light, as we prepared for our departure from the tranquil settings of the hotel on Mahe. Our next destination was Praslin, an island renowned for its pristine beaches and lush landscapes, promising a continuation of our Seychelles adventure. Opting for air travel over the ferry was a decision influenced by both cost and convenience; the ferry's journey of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes at a cost of around 60 EUR per adult contrasted with the swift and scenic flight option provided a compelling case for flying.
Our journey was facilitated by Air Seychelles, whose efficient operation of multiple daily flights between Mahe and Praslin ensured a seamless transition for travelers like us. The choice of the Viking DHC-6-400 Twin Otter for these flights spoke to the airline's commitment to reliability and adaptability, qualities we experienced firsthand when our original flight, HM3110, was rescheduled to an earlier time, HM3104 at 10:35 am. This adjustment, a reflection of the airline's dynamic scheduling based on passenger load, was handled with professionalism and minimal inconvenience.
The flight, a brief interlude in the air lasting only 12 minutes, was a marvel of efficiency, covering the 44 km distance with ease and offering us aerial views of the archipelago's stunning topography. Upon landing, our transition to Praslin's embrace was marked by a taxi transfer to our accommodation, with the fare of 600 SCR (about 40 USD).
The Acajou Beach Resort awaited us, its location on the famed Cote D'Or beach a perfect testament to Praslin's natural beauty. The early check-in process was smooth, allowing us to quickly immerse ourselves in the resort's offerings and the beach's inviting sands. Cote D'Or's allure lay not just in its picturesque scenery but in the sense of peace it offered, a welcome respite and a stark contrast to the bustling life back home.
Our afternoon was a leisurely exploration of Cote D'Or's extensive beach, where the gentle lapping of waves and the softness of the sand underfoot provided a tactile symphony of nature's calm. The decision to venture out, despite the resort's allure, was rewarded with encounters that enriched our understanding of the island's geography and community life.
A short walk from Cote D'Or led us to a vibrant area teeming with shops and restaurants, a microcosm of Praslin's lively cultural scene. This exploration, though brief, was a dive into the everyday life of the island, culminating in a dinner at Pirogue Restaurant & Bar. The restaurant, with its Creole influences and fresh, local ingredients, offered a culinary journey that was as much a part of our Seychelles adventure as the beaches and flights.
As night descended, the comfort of Acajou Beach Resort welcomed us back, its hospitality a gentle end to a day of discovery and movement. Our accommodation, nestled on the shores of Anse Forbans, was not just a place to rest but a vantage point from which to appreciate the quiet beauty of Praslin's nightscape.
Lying in the tranquility of our resort, we reflected on the day's journey—from the early departure on Mahe to the serene expanses of Praslin's beaches. Each moment, from the anticipatory buzz of the airport to the culinary delights of Pirogue Restaurant & Bar, wove together into a narrative of exploration, discovery, and the enduring allure of Seychelles. 29th February 2024 - Praslin's Coastal Gem
The leap year day of February 29th, 2024, found us eager to explore one of Praslin's most celebrated beaches, Anse Lazio. Opting for a more local and sustainable mode of transport, we decided against car rental in favor of the island's bus service. The bus system in Praslin offers a practical and affordable way to navigate the island, with tickets available at select shops. At just 10 SCR, the bus fare is not only economical but also a chance to engage with everyday island life. The convenience of a bus card, which you simply scan upon boarding, added a modern touch to our rustic adventure.
Our destination, Anse Lazio beach, required a bus ride followed by a 1km walk, which included a notably steep climb. While the ascent was somewhat challenging, it was by no means insurmountable, offering both a physical exercise and an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the lush surroundings. This approach not only saved us a significant sum, compared to the 600 SCR one-way taxi fare from our hotel, but also enriched our experience with a sense of achievement upon reaching the beach.
Anse Lazio greeted us with its stunning beauty, a picturesque setting that more than justified its reputation. We spent several hours lounging on its sandy shores, swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. The beach's natural beauty, coupled with the warmth of the sun, made for an idyllic retreat from the world.
Our return journey involved a mindful walk back to the bus station, where we caught the last bus of the day— a reminder of the importance of keeping track of bus schedules to avoid being stranded. Arriving back at our hotel at 6:30 pm, we reflected on the day's adventures and the beauty of Anse Lazio.
Dinner was served at the hotel's restaurant, Les Boucaniers, where the culinary offerings lived up to the high expectations set by our experiences thus far. The delicious food was a fitting end to a day filled with natural beauty and exploration.
As we settled in for the night at the hotel, the day's experiences lingered in our minds. From the practical learning curve of using public transport on the island to the breathtaking vistas and tranquil moments at Anse Lazio Beach, every element of the day contributed to a deeper appreciation of Praslin's charm.
1st March 2024 - La Digue
On the 1st of March, 2024, our adventure began with a brisk departure from our hotel to the ferry harbor on Praslin. The short, five-minute bus ride, preluded by a fifteen-minute wait, was the start of a day that would unfold into a fascinating exploration of Seychelles' natural beauty and historical allure.
The ferry tickets were procured at the harbor for the Cat Cocos ferry, a reliable and efficient service connecting the islands. We opted for the 10 a.m. departure, with plans to return at 5 p.m., though the flexibility to return earlier was available. At 32 EUR per person for a round trip, the ferry offered a seamless transition between islands, setting the stage for our exploration of La Digue.
Upon docking at La Digue around 10:15 a.m., the availability of bicycles and golf carts right at the arrival point was a welcome sight. With rental rates for bikes ranging between 150-300 SCR and golf cart hire at 10 EUR per person, we chose the latter for our group's convenience. For those who prefer a more physically engaging mode of transport, the bicycle presents an excellent opportunity to traverse the island's varied terrain, including its challenging slopes.
Our adventure led us from the harbor to the northern side of the island, with our first destination being Anse Fourmis. The journey continued to Anse Patates Beach, followed by a stop at Anse Severe, where the sight of huge turtles added a touch of wonder to our tour.
Our trek proceeded to Grand Anse, a stunning beach known for its pristine, turquoise waters, ideal for swimming. Despite the overcast skies and intermittent light showers, the beauty of Grand Anse remained undiminished.
The climax of our island tour was Anse Source d’Argent, renowned as the most celebrated beach in Seychelles. The shallow waters, rich with algae, might not offer the best swimming experience, yet the beach's splendor was undeniable. The entrance fee to this beach, part of L'Union Estate, was SCR 150 per person, a small price for the experience of such iconic scenery. Facilities like toilets and showers were conveniently located near the entrance, and the path to the beach was lined with shops offering souvenirs, allowing for a blend of natural beauty and local culture.
Our return to the harbor was hastened by the onset of heavy rain, leading to an earlier than planned departure on the 4 p.m. ferry back to Praslin. Safely back on Praslin by 5 p.m., we reflected on the day's experiences as we took the bus back to our hotel, the Acajou Beach Resort, where a delightful dinner awaited us.
Our day trip from Praslin to La Digue encapsulated the essence of the Seychelles' natural and historical richness. From the convenience and efficiency of the Cat Cocos ferry to the breathtaking vistas and cultural experiences on La Digue, every moment was a testament to the archipelago's enduring allure. The Seychelles, with its blend of natural beauty, historical sites, and welcoming amenities, offers an unparalleled experience for the discerning traveler, making every visit a memorable journey into the heart of the Indian Ocean's treasures.
2nd March 2024 - A Travelogue of Our Journey Back
Our adventure in the Seychelles continued into its final chapter on March 2nd, 2024, as we soaked up the morning sun on the serene Cote d’Or beach on Praslin. Known for its golden sands stretching along the coast, offering a tranquil retreat, this beach was the perfect setting for our last few hours on the island.
Midday approached, and it was time to head to the airport. We opted for a van-taxi, which cost us 600 SCR, a reasonable fare for the convenience of reaching our departure gate without hassle. Our scheduled flight from Praslin to Mahe was at 4.20 pm, but, fortunately, we were rebooked on an earlier flight at 15.55. This change underscored a valuable travel tip for the Seychelles: the inter-island flights, while frequent, are subject to changes or cancellations for various operational reasons. It's essential to stay informed by checking emails and the airline's updates, especially in the 24 hours leading up to departure, to ensure a smooth transition between islands.
Our foresight in booking the flight from Praslin to Mahe well ahead of our international connection to Istanbul was a decision well made. It gave us a buffer in case of any schedule adjustments, ensuring we wouldn't miss our connecting flight due to unforeseen delays.
We landed in Mahe at 15.55 aboard Air Seychelles flight HM 3155. With some time to spare before our next flight, we opted to stay at the airport. The decision was partly influenced by the high cost of luggage storage, priced at 240 SCR per piece, which didn’t justify the brief window we had to potentially explore Victoria, the capital.
At 9 pm, we embarked on our Turkish Airlines flight TK749 from Victoria to Istanbul, marking the beginning of our journey back to Europe. The flight was a quiet reflection of the wonderful experiences we had in the Seychelles, a bittersweet farewell to its shores.
3rd March 2024 - Arrival Home
Arriving in Istanbul on March 3rd at 4.10 am, we faced a layover of nearly four hours. The Istanbul airport, with its sprawling facilities, offered a comfortable wait, although we chose not to leave the terminal area. Our next leg was with Turkish Airlines flight TK1629 to Munich at 7.55 am.
After a 2h 40m layover in Munich we boarded our Lufthansa flight LH1656 to Timisoara. This final leg of our journey was smooth, and anticipation grew as we neared home.
We touched down in Timisoara at 1.45 pm, the end of our extensive but fulfilling journey. From the lush landscapes of the Seychelles to the vibrant corridors of international airports, each step of our return was a reminder of the diverse experiences travel brings into our lives.
Reflecting on our journey that commenced with the awe-inspiring majesty of Victoria Falls, and continued to the tranquil beaches of Praslin and La Digue, our trip encapsulated the incredible diversity of landscapes and experiences our world has to offer. Starting at Victoria Falls, we were greeted by the spectacular sight of one of the world’s most renowned waterfalls. The powerful roar and the misty veils of water plunging into the Zambezi Gorge were a humbling reminder of nature's grandeur.
Following this natural wonder, the serene beauty of the Seychelles offered a peaceful respite.
