21st August 2022 - From Timișoara to Calgary

There's an unparalleled excitement in embarking on a trip, and today's adventure promised just that. With our bags packed and cameras charged, we started the day in Timișoara, our home city. The journey ahead? Endless mountains and memories.

The day began with a car transfer from Timișoara to Budapest. The journey to Budapest took approximately 3 hours

Budapest, the ‘Pearl of the Danube,’ is an amalgamation of two cities, Buda and Pest, divided by the beautiful Danube River. While the layover didn't permit a detailed exploration, the city's spires, bridges, and the majestic Hungarian Parliament building provided a glimpse of its Austro-Hungarian Empire heritage.

Boarding Swiss Air flight LX2255 to Zurich was a breeze. As we ascended over Hungary, the patchwork of fields, lakes, and towns formed a picturesque view, a stark contrast to the urban elegance of Budapest.

Landing in Zurich, the transition was observable. The Alps' towering presence, even from the airport, is a testament to Switzerland's majestic natural beauty.

Zurich's efficient and modern airport made the transfer easy. Flight WK24 took us on a 9 hours transatlantic flight over the heart of Europe, offering views of the Alps before spanning the vast Atlantic.

As the plane descended into Calgary, around 8 pm, the sprawling city contrasted with the distant Rocky Mountains depicted a varied panorama. Calgary, the heart of Canadian cowboy culture, has a blend of urban sophistication with rugged natural beauty.

Upon arrival, the cool Canadian air was refreshing. As the sun set, Calgary's skyline lit up, welcoming weary travelers.

Situated in the heart of the city, the Marriott Downtown Calgary was the perfect end to a long journey. The contemporary designs, coupled with a good service, and a friendly staff made for a relaxing evening. The panoramic city views from the room reminded me of the day's travels, bridging the old world charm of Timișoara with the modern vibrancy of Calgary.

22nd August 2022 - Day 2: Immersed in Calgary's Rich Tapestry

The morning broke over Calgary, a city with roots deeply anchored in its storied past, yet with its eyes set firmly on the future. Today's itinerary focused on exploring deeper its core, absorbing the essence of this State of Alberta gem. Calgary, located in Alberta, Canada, was originally home to Indigenous tribes such as the Blackfoot, Stoney, and Tsuut'ina. The area saw European exploration in the 19th century and grew around Fort Calgary, established by the North-West Mounted Police in 1875. Its growth accelerated with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883. Calgary became renowned for the Calgary Stampede, which began in 1912, and its economic landscape transformed with oil discoveries in the 20th century. The city gained global attention hosting the 1988 Winter Olympics and, while still an energy hub, has diversified its economy in the 21st century.

10 am - Calgary Free Walking Tour

Launching our day was a meticulously curated 3-hour walking tour. Each stride on the city’s pavements revealed fascinating anecdotes and insights. With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, Calgary's streets transformed into open history books, recounting tales from the fur trade era to its evolution as an oil industry titan.

Downtown Calgary

As we wandered through downtown, soaring skyscrapers stood as sentinels of progress, hinting at Calgary's status as an economic powerhouse. Yet, in the shadows of these contemporary structures, history whispered. A highlight was the Stephen Avenue Walk, where historic sandstone buildings evoked images of a time when Calgary was taking its baby steps towards urbanization.

Central Library

Our journey led us next to the Central Library, a masterpiece that is as much about architecture as it is about literature. The library's facade, with its captivating geometric patterns, houses a treasure trove of books, artworks, and digital resources. It's more than just a repository; it's a dynamic space that underlines Calgary's dedication to fostering a culturally rich and informed community.

Calgary Tower

The skyline's defining feature, Calgary Tower, loomed next on our agenda. Ascending this iconic structure, the view that unfurled before our eyes was a stunning mosaic of city, plains, and distant mountains. The tower, once a symbol of Calgary's booming growth, continues to stand tall, reminding residents and visitors of the city's unstoppable spirit.

Heritage Park

Transitioning from the urban sprawl, Heritage Park offered a rich, immersive experience into Calgary's bygone eras. This expansive living museum took us on a captivating journey, from the hustle and bustle of early trading posts to the quaint charm of prairie towns. Interactions with costumed interpreters brought tales of pioneers, settlers, and First Nations to life, weaving a comprehensive narrative of Calgary's foundational years.

Calgary, often perceived merely as a threshold to the Rockies, unraveled its multifaceted personality to us. As our second day drew to an end, anticipation bubbled for the subsequent days' adventures, with the promise of more discoveries awaiting in this Canadian marvel.

23rd August 2022 - From the Urban Thrills of Calgary to Jasper's Timeless Nature

Calgary, with its high-rise skyline and pulsating energy, set the stage for what would unfold as a day of exploring Alberta's vast and varied wilderness.

Morning Departure: Calgary’s Call

At 9 am, we set out from Calgary, leaving behind the morning hum of the city, as the horizon transformed from urban contours to nature’s expansive canvas. Each kilometer seemed to peel back layers of time, revealing a landscape etched by eons of natural forces at play.

A Sojourn at Jura Creek

A mere hour's drive and 88 kilometers later, we found ourselves at Jura Creek. This geological wonder has been shaped over countless millennia, with winding trails and babbling streams flanked by ancient limestone formations. Every step in this region seemed to echo with tales from epochs gone by.

On the road:

The Odyssey Continues: Towards Maligne Lake

The journey from Jura Creek to Maligne Lake, though lasting 4 hours and 30 minutes over a span of 375km, felt timeless. The evolving scenery, with dense woods, vast open spaces, and the mighty Rockies standing sentinel, was a testament to Alberta's diverse terrains. Each bend in the road seemed to introduce a fresh, captivating chapter of nature’s grand narrative.

Arriving at Maligne Lake, we were greeted by a spread of azure that seemed to touch the very skies. Our 1 hour and 30 minutes on the cruise felt like a voyage through a living painting. We were regaled with tales of the First Nations, the explorers who once tread these lands, and the geological events that birthed this pristine water body. The solitary silhouette of Spirit Island, surrounded by the lake's vastness, spoke of ages past and the mysteries of nature.

The Maligne Canyon Adventure

Post our aquatic adventure, a 40-minute drive transported us to Maligne Canyon, one of nature's masterpieces. With its deep, narrow confines, this canyon is a living chronicle of the power and persistence of the Maligne River. Our hike, stretching 3.7 km, took us past roaring waterfalls, intricate rock formations, and viewpoints that presented nature in all its raw splendor.

As the day’s activities wound down, we made our way to Miette Mountain Cabins in Jasper.

Transitioning from Calgary's urban vibrancy to the undisturbed tranquility of Jasper's wilds, the day was a profound exploration of contrasts. Alberta, in its vastness, narrated tales of history, culture, and nature's relentless creativity, ensuring memories that would be cherished for years to come.

24th August 2022 - From Jasper's Heights to Banff's Iconic Vistas: A Day Amidst the Rockies

The crisp morning air in Jasper hinted at the adventures that lay ahead. From glacier encounters to waterfall wonders, the day promised a comprehensive view of the Canadian Rockies.

Edith Cavell Meadows Trail: Dawn's First Light

At 6:30 am we began the day early, setting out for the renowned Edith Cavell Meadows Trail. As history whispers, the trail is named after Edith Cavell, a British nurse celebrated for saving lives during World War I. The trail's 6-7km stretch, which we traversed over 3 hours and 30 minutes, offered an evolving landscape of alpine meadows, glacial views, and the imposing Mount Edith Cavell.

The hike was invigorating, not just for the breathtaking views, but for the history it echoed. Every step seemed to resonate with the past, a tribute to the heroic acts of Edith Cavell and the majesty of the natural world.

Chasing the Cascade: Sunwapta and Athabasca Falls

Post our morning hike, we embarked on a 1-hour drive leading us to the thunderous beauty of Sunwapta Falls. The cascade's roar, combined with the backdrop of the expansive Rockies, provided a truly awe-inspiring sight. Just 24km down the road, Athabasca Falls awaited. Another powerful testament to nature's force, the falls carve through the rocks, painting an ever-changing tableau of water and stone.

Athabasca Glacier: Stepping Back in Time

With barely a moment to absorb the grandeur of the falls, we set out once again, covering 74km in just an hour to reach one of the highlights of our journey: the Athabasca Glacier. As we commenced our tour at 3:30 pm, we learned of an intriguing fact: the meltwater from the Athabasca Glacier uniquely contributes to three distinct oceans. The glacier's meltwater meanders its way into river systems that eventually feed into the Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans. This intricate hydrological trait underlines the glacier's broader role in the regional watershed and its climatic significance.

The ice beneath our feet felt like touching history itself, considering the glacier has been forming for thousands of years. The layers of ice narrated tales of different eras, showcasing the climatic shifts and the Earth's evolving narrative. Adding another dimension to the experience was the skywalk, which floated above the vastness, providing a bird's-eye view of the icy expanse and the deep valleys beneath.

The day's grand finale was our retreat to Baker Creek Mountain Resort near Banff. This haven, surrounded by dense forests and the silhouette of the Rockies, provided the perfect ambiance to reflect on the day's experiences. With log cabins that radiated a rustic charm and the distant murmur of the creek, it was the ideal setting to rejuvenate for another day of exploration.

Transitioning from Jasper's high alpine trails to Banff's serene settings, the day was a panoramic exploration of nature and history. The Canadian Rockies, with their towering peaks, cascading falls, and ancient glaciers, not only offered visual treats but also narrated tales from epochs gone by, creating memories that will remain etched in our minds.

The first light of day painted a canvas of anticipation for our explorations in Banff. From the pristine serenity of Emerald Lake to the awe-inspiring grandeur of Takkakaw Falls, our journey was set against a backdrop of water in its many splendid forms.

Emerald Lake: A Vivid Landscape

Our day commenced at Emerald Lake, a body of water that brilliantly mirrors its name. The vibrant greens of the water, reflecting the surrounding mountainous terrain, presented a picture of tranquil beauty. As we ambled along its shores, it was enlightening to think of the glacial actions that carved this magnificent basin, leaving behind this treasure for us to admire.

Takkakaw Falls: Majestic Descent

Transitioning from the calm of the lake, Takkakaw Falls greeted us with its awe-filled majesty. Water surged from great altitudes, producing an echoing roar that was accompanied by a refreshing mist. The history of these falls runs deep, with their formation a result of ancient geological processes. Today, they stand as a powerful reminder of nature's dynamism.

Lake Louise: A Golden Evening Spectacle

As the day wore on, we found ourselves at the shores of Our day's final stop was the Lake Louise, just as the sun cast its amber tones across the sky. This iconic lake, steeped in indigenous lore and tales of early adventurers, sparkled under the evening light, its waters reflecting the luminous skies and shadowy mountain outlines.

Vermilion Lakes: Twilight's Serenade

Our day's final stop was at the Vermilion Lakes. These water bodies, with their historic significance and geological curiosities, shimmered under the dusky sky. A oasis of peace, the lakes offered moments of introspection and appreciation for the timeless beauty of the Canadian Rockies.

With night falling, we retreated to our lodgings at Baker Creek Mountain Resort near Banff. Set against a backdrop of trees and the hazy outlines of mountains, this refuge was the perfect conclusion to a day steeped in natural splendor.

Banff's wonders, each with its unique charm and historical footprint, made this day unforgettable. As we closed our eyes, images of pristine lakes, majestic waterfalls, and the golden hues of sunset danced in our dreams, promising another day of adventures in this magnificent landscape.

26th August 2022 - Ascending to Awe: A Day in Banff's Elevated Elegance

With the first light of day illuminating the Rockies, Banff, a treasure trove of natural allure, awaited our exploration. From reflective lakes to an ascent into the skies, every experience seemed to echo the tales of time.

Lake Moraine: The Azure Mirror

Our morning began at Lake Moraine, a gem set amidst the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Its luminescent turquoise waters, a result of light refracting off glacial rock flour, provided a pristine backdrop. Indigenous tribes once considered these waters sacred, and it's easy to understand why. Every ripple on its surface hinted at millennia of history and geological evolution.

Lake Louise: A Sapphire in Stone

From Moraine, we journeyed to the other jewel, Lake Louise. Framed by imposing mountains and verdant forests, the lake presented a tableau of serenity. Historical accounts suggest that Indigenous peoples used this area for hunting and camping long before explorers labeled it a "lake of the little fishes". As we walked its perimeter, it felt as though we were tracing the steps of those who'd admired its beauty centuries ago.

Banff Gondola: Skyward Bound

Post our lake visits, we made our ascent with the Banff Gondola. As we soared upwards, the sprawling views of the Bow Valley unfurled below us. Reaching Sulphur Mountain's summit, a panoramic spectacle of six mountain ranges, the Bow River, and the town of Banff greeted us. Here, atop this elevation, one could not only witness nature's grandeur but also sense the historical significance of the pathways and railways that brought explorers and settlers to this region.

Banff: The Alpine Enigma

Descending from our aerial adventure, we ventured into the heart of Banff town. This locale, more than just a tourist spot, holds tales of the railway workers who stumbled upon the hot springs, leading to the establishment of Canada's first national park. As we wandered its streets, every corner seemed to whisper stories of its transformative journey from a remote outpost to a world-renowned alpine sanctuary.

As twilight descended, we retraced our steps to the comfort of Baker Creek Mountain Resort. Positioned amidst nature's splendor, it was the ideal location to unwind, recollecting the day's encounters and prepping for what the subsequent sunrise might introduce.

Exploring Banff, where nature's artistry mingles with historical echoes, deepened our appreciation for both the land's visual appeal and its storied past. As the evening's silence settled in, anticipation for yet another day of discoveries in the heart of the Rockies grew.

In the early morning we set out from Banff, eager for new adventures. Our path would lead us through sky-high bridges, majestic national parks, and the lively pulse of Kelowna's streets.

Golden Sky Bridge: Walking Among the Clouds

The noon found us at the Golden Sky Bridge, Canada's highest suspension bridge. Here, as we traversed the airy expanse, it felt as though we were floating above the world. Leaving the bridges behind, our trip ushered us into the embrace of Mount Revelstoke National Park. Every step here felt like a voyage through history. Ancient cedar and pine forests, some trees hundreds of years old, stood tall, their trunks bearing silent witness to the passage of time. Historically, this area was a crucial location for the Indigenous Sinixt and Ktunaxa peoples, providing seasonal hunting grounds. As we explored, the meandering trails and untouched landscapes seemed to echo their long-held reverence for this majestic territory.

By afternoon, around 6 pm, we arrived in Kelowna, a vibrant city on the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake. 28th August 2022 - From Wine Country to Urban Energy: Kelowna to Vancouver

The promise of a new city, Vancouver filled us with anticipation. While the peaceful allure of Kelowna's landscapes was hard to leave behind, the prospect of Vancouver's lively urban rhythms called out to us.

A Drive Amidst Nature's Grandeur

Our journey from Kelowna to Vancouver was a tapestry of evolving landscapes. The 4h 30 drive, covering a span of 390km, provided a visual feast. Rolling hills gave way to verdant forests and expansive vistas, while distant mountains loomed, their peaks brushing against the sky. Historically, this route has been an essential conduit for trade and communication between British Columbia's interior and its coastal regions. Indigenous tribes such as the Secwepemc and the Nlaka'pamux have lived and traveled across these lands for millennia, making the journey not just scenic, but also profoundly historical.

The Pulse of Vancouver: A Modern Metropolis with Deep Roots

As Kelowna faded into our rearview, the dynamic silhouette of Vancouver emerged. A city rich in history and bustling with modern-day vivacity, Vancouver is a place where cultures converge. The Coast Salish people, including the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, have called this territory home for thousands of years. Their legacy is evident in various parts of the city, reminding us of the rich tapestry of cultures that contribute to Vancouver's unique identity.

Streets lined with contemporary architecture blend seamlessly with historic neighborhoods. Every corner offers a taste of the city's diverse culinary scene, influenced by its multicultural residents. The city's coastal position also adds a certain zest to its ambience, with the Pacific Ocean providing both stunning views and a cool, refreshing climate.

As evening approached, we sought solace at The Sutton Place Hotel. Located in the heart of Vancouver, it was the perfect spot to rest, recoup, and reflect on our day's journey.

The transition from Kelowna's wine-soaked tranquility to the spirited beats of Vancouver was a journey of contrasts. As we drifted to sleep in the plush confines of The Sutton Place, we were filled with gratitude for the experiences the day offered and eager anticipation for the next day's adventures in this vibrant city.

Footsteps Through Time: Free Walking Tour

Initiating our day with a free walking tour was like stepping into a time machine. Vancouver, despite its modern facade, is deeply rooted in history. With every step, we uncovered tales of the indigenous Coast Salish tribes and their interactions with European settlers, pivotal moments that shaped the city's growth, and the fusion of cultures that make Vancouver the vibrant melting pot it is today.

Gastown: Echoes of the Past

Among the city's historic districts, Gastown stands out as a tribute to the bygone era. Cobblestone streets echo the footsteps of 'Gassy' Jack Deighton, the English sailor after whom the district was named. Here, amidst vintage buildings, boutique shops, and aromatic cafes, one can't help but feel the city's pulse and its embrace of both the old and the new.

A visit to Gastown would be incomplete without witnessing the iconic Gastown Steam Clock. Every quarter hour, it offers a melodious whistle and steam display. While it might look vintage, it's a relatively young addition from 1977, designed to cover a steam grate and to harness its steam.

Waterfront

Moving on to the Waterfront, the panoramic views of the Pacific are simply breathtaking. Historically, this area was a bustling hub for traders and settlers, acting as a gateway to the Pacific. Today, it's an amalgamation of commerce, beauty, and leisure.

Literary Architectural Marvel: Vancouver Public Library, Central Library

As an ode to the city's commitment to knowledge and community, the Vancouver Public Library's Central Library is an architectural masterpiece. Its design reminds many of the Roman Colosseum, but inside, it's a modern repository of literature, knowledge, and community gatherings.

FlyOver Canada: A Bird's-Eye Adventure

The afternoon was reserved for an adrenaline-pumping experience: FlyOver Canada. We were 'transported' on a panoramic journey across Canada’s vast landscapes. The immersive experience, powered by cutting-edge technology, made us feel the thrill of flying over expansive terrains, from majestic mountains to lush forests. We definitely recommend this expereince!

With its rich tapestry of experiences, it's no wonder that Vancouver remains one of the world's most sought-after travel destinations. And as the sun set on our ninth day, we were grateful for yet another unforgettable journey.

The expansive blue, punctuated with distant islands and playful marine life, hinted at the day's forthcoming adventures.

Botanical Beach: Nature's Own Exhibition

Following a scenic 2-hour drive, we arrived at Botanical Beach. Known for its rich tidal pools, this shoreline is a treasure trove for nature enthusiasts. With each receding tide, the ocean unveils a world teeming with starfish, sea urchins, and vibrant seaweed. But it's not just marine life that makes Botanical Beach intriguing. Historically, this was a sacred site for the Pacheedaht First Nation, long before the allure of its tidal wonders caught the attention of explorers and travelers.

Sombrio Beach: An Oceanic Oasis

Our next halt was Sombrio Beach. Unlike the more curated experiences of many tourist hotspots, Sombrio offers raw beauty. Crashing waves, the scent of salt in the air, and the distant call of gulls conjure an atmosphere of undisturbed wilderness. Historically, Sombrio holds significance as a seasonal fishing village for indigenous communities, a testament to the timeless bond between the island's original inhabitants and its bountiful nature.

Victoria: Elegance and Epochs Entwined

As daylight began its descent, our journey led us to the heart of the island, the city of Victoria. As British Columbia's capital, Victoria is a tapestry of colonial heritage and modern vibrancy. The city's architecture, with Victorian-era facades and rose gardens, speaks of its colonial past. The Royal BC Museum, a must-visit, provides a rich dive into the area's indigenous history, colonial narratives, and natural wonders.

Homeward Bound: The Evening Ferry to Vancouver

By 9 pm, it was time to bid adieu to the island's enchantments. The Victoria ferry, like a trusted steed, stood ready to take us back to Vancouver. As the island's silhouette faded into the night, we were left with memories of tidal wonders, historical revelations, and the raw beauty of untouched shores.
