Globetrotters: Philip Zaharie, Ariana Mîndru

18th May 2023 - TIMIȘOARA - MUNICH - NEW YORK

From the vibrant heart of Timișoara, we set forth on an adventure to the iconic "Big Apple". With excitement in our hearts, we boarded flight LH1657, heading towards Munich.

Our brief layover in Munich was just that - brief. Soon, it was time to board flight LH412, a direct route to the city that never sleeps - New York.

Upon our 7 pm arrival at New York's Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), the distant silhouette of the city skyline immediately caught our eyes. The setting sun painted the horizon with golden hues, making the skyscrapers shine like never before.

After navigating the bustling airport, we opted for a taxi ride to fully immerse ourselves in the city's rhythm right from the start. The cacophony of honks, the vibrant neon signs, and the rush of the crowd felt invigorating. The city pulsed with life, every street telling its own story, every corner holding its own secret.

We finally checked into our accommodation at the Hyatt Place, located right at the heart of the action - Times Square. The location promised a front-row seat to the city's electric energy. As the day came to a close, we could barely contain our enthusiasm for the days ahead, ready to plunge deep into the core of this urban marvel.

19th May 2023 - NEW YORK

Day two in the Big Apple, and the excitement continues. This vibrant city, with its towering skyscrapers and energy-filled streets, awaits our exploration. Let's dive into today's adventures.

UN Headquarters tour

Stepping into the iconic United Nations Headquarters at precisely 1 pm, we are immediately reminded of its profound importance in global affairs. Constructed between 1948 and 1952, this sprawling compound along the East River holds a prominent place in world history. A guided tour introduces us to the main halls, each narrating stories of peacekeeping, human rights, and international cooperation.

The General Assembly Hall, with its iconic gold backdrop, is where all 193 member states gather to make vital decisions. As you stand in this room, it's fascinating to think of all the world-changing decisions that have been made within these walls.

After the General Assembly, we move on to the Security Council Chamber, a gift from Norway to the UN. The rich blue color of the seating area stands out, reflecting the sea and the skies, symbolizing global unity. Each part of the UN complex tells tales of diplomacy, dedication, and hope for a united world.

From the solemnity of the UN, we transition to the lively and vibrant area of Times Square. The neon lights and oversized electronic billboards make this place unmistakable. It feels as if one is in the very heart of the city's pulse.

Often referred to as the "Crossroads of the World," Times Square is more than just a tourist spot. It's a cultural melting pot, with theaters, shops, restaurants, and of course, the famous New Year's Eve ball drop. As we stroll, the atmosphere is electric. Street performers entertain, and the numerous shops invite us to indulge in a bit of retail therapy.

As evening approaches, we set our sights on SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, one of the latest additions to New York's skyline. This architectural marvel is more than just a building. It’s an interactive experience.

Upon entering, we ascend, feeling the sensation of being lifted high above the streets. The panoramic views of Manhattan from the observatory are nothing short of breathtaking. The city lights glisten, and the East River reflects the last light of the day. But it's not just about views; SUMMIT offers an immersive art experience too, with installations designed to amplify the sensation of being suspended above the metropolis.

Post our adventures, we headed to the hotel.

And so, our second day in New York comes to a close. From the historic corridors of the UN to the lively lanes of Times Square, and the heights of SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, we've truly experienced the many faces of this dynamic city.

20th May 2023 - On the way back

The third day of our expedition began with an unpredicted turn in the weather. However, true travelers know how to adapt, and sometimes, these very moments turn into the most memorable.

Before leaving New York, a visit to Katz's Delicatessen was essential. Located on the Lower East Side, Katz's is not just a deli, but a slice of New York's culinary history. Established in 1888, this establishment has seen the flux of time, from the influx of Jewish immigrants to the gentrification of the city.

Walking in, the scents of smoked meats and pickles greet us. Crowds cluster around, pointing at the deli meats and barking orders. And when the iconic pastrami sandwich lands on our table, its allure is undeniable. Layers upon layers of perfectly smoked pastrami, wedged between two slices of rye bread with a hint of mustard - it's an experience, a bite into the legacy of New York's immigrant culture.

After our hearty meal, the weather decided to play spoilsport. The skies darkened, and the city was soon under a blanket of rain. However, this gave us a chance to experience New York in a different light, with its gleaming streets reflecting the city's luminosity. We took this time to relax, write, and reminisce about our days in this unforgettable metropolis.

As the day neared its end, it was time to bid adieu to New York. We hailed a taxi, which wove through the slick streets, offering one last view of the city that had been our host for the past week.

The Lufthansa flight LH413 was our bridge from one world to another. Soaring high above the Atlantic, we left behind the city of dreams, setting course to Munich, the heart of Bavaria.

21st May 2023 - Home

Our flight touched down in Munich at 10 am and after half an our, we boarded Lufthansa flight LH1656, eager to reach our final destination.
